Jamaat-e-Islami ends 29-day sit-in after agreement with Sindh govt

Sindh minister reads out agreement

The Sindh government will bring amendments to the Local Government Act of 2013, announced the local government minister, Nasir Hussain Shah.

“The provincial government will issue notifications within two weeks,” he said.

The Jamaat-e-Islami and Sindh government have reached an agreement to amend the controversial local government law, prompting the party to wrap up their 29-day sit-in outside the Sindh Assembly.

Consequently, the JI has called off its scheduled protest at five different places in Karachi.

The local government minister, Nasir Hussain Shah, and Karachi Administrator Murtaza Wahab met the party leaders and signed an agreement late Thursday night.

Shah read out the salient points of the agreement after successful negotiations.

According to the agreement, the Local Bodies’ health and education institutions will again be handed over to the local bodies.

The provincial government will release monthly and annual funds to Union Councils on the basis of population, Shah added.

The mayor will be the chairperson of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board, besides heading the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board. The Sindh government also agreed to establish a Provincial Finance Commission.

The mayor and town chairperson will be members of the commission.

Powers will be given to the mayor and chairperson in the Building Control Authority and other development authorities.

While talking on SAMAA TV’s morning show Naya Din, JI Karachi leader Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman described the establishment of the PFC award a “historic” deal.
