E-books
When you think of e-books, your first instinct is to think about how they are used in the classroom or by students when they are learning to code. But what about at home? What do people use e-books for everyday? So much of this depends on who one thinks and where one lives. The internet has changed everything! Now, everyone can download almost any ebook that you want and most importantly, no one cares if it’s a print copy or an ebook. In fact, all books have become digital books. Yes, even children’s book authors from famous publications like HarperCollins and McGraw Hill use ebook versions now.
Now, why aren’t kids using e-books as we did 10 years ago? Well, because there are so many reasons. E-book publishers were trying to make more money than traditional publishers were making. They were also concerned about sales and they thought that with online readership would be higher than ever before. Also, E-book sellers didn’t care about getting rid of physical copies because they couldn't make more money. That means online publishers didn’t care whether or not their books sold well and they didn’t care about keeping them in business. Many small publishers did however decide to go digital because they wanted to make money through e-books. I personally believe that going digital will be great for our economy because we can’t support them anymore. Digital publishers are struggling right now and they just don’t see how far they can take things. Online publishers are coming out strong. These days, you can find some amazing content like novels, self-help, and nonfiction just waiting to hit shelves. Not only do these authors charge royalties for each of the books that they publish but now, more and more publishing companies will start offering free trials and trial offers to entice readers. Amazon started doing something called “Kindle Unlimited” and now several other platforms do similar products. It makes sense that authors will want to sell their books on those platforms. Plus, e-book writers can now write better stories that make them have lots of followers. Some of my favorite writers do it better than others and some others produce more than expected results. There are hundreds of thousands of bestsellers in e-books all written over the past two decades. If e-book writers decide to go with e-book publishing and pay royalties, it could be huge for the industry if they do what every publisher had done for ten years. There are plenty of ways to earn enough income to support yourself in life. You could start selling things at eBay for example, I started selling vintage watches, which is pretty easy and lucrative. You could sell books at Kobo.com and get paid around $1–2 per 100 pages (maybe less). Those are big bucks. Then there’s the Etsy store where I sell old clothing and jewelry. Most of my work there is antique items. A new thing is writing short stories and poems for children, so watch out for that one too but I’m sure they won’t stop. Other great things there for me are knitting and crochet projects. All these things are pretty hard for anyone to do without a degree in the arts (I don’t know about all these professions) but with skills you learn online, you can make a living. For instance, you can be a travel blogger or a stock trader. Anybody can make a living through selling handmade goods and crafting. So why don’t we make them available to us online? Start selling them on sites like Etsy. This way, buyers can purchase directly from creators and there is no need to ship things back. Buyers of those made goods are helping fund local economies (at least from me), and we need to show them how to build those economies. My main reason was e-commerce but many online retail giants are starting to offer discounted prices for their own online stores. Why not open up shop at your own website and make it a success instead of sending you orders via email or phone call? Another advantage is that you can list your product for sale and bid on things as a seller. I recently opened up an Etsy store on Facebook and it was just becoming popular! People can place bids and have things bought before they get to the end of it. You can learn to set up your shop and sell anything ranging from sewing to photography. Whatever is your skill (with a little effort), you can teach others without spending a lot of money on tutors or classes. You can write e-books of courses and trainees on websites like Coursera, TeachToLead, etc. You can also provide consulting services to your customers. I recently worked with someone in my field, named Brian Lengel, who helped his clients expand their businesses to bigger audiences and they will share his business secrets with hundreds of thousands of people. One of his clients is taking their e-commerce efforts to social media. His goal is to reach millions of people who use various social media marketing tactics. He wants to help spread awareness about online shopping and social media marketing. We should bring people together instead of them having each other down and feeling threatened by competition, bad customer service, or low quality materials.
It’s clear that e-books have grown into the most important type of reading nowadays. E-book publishers are finding a way to create compelling content and make it available to as many ebook readers as possible! As we can see, technology is changing all aspects of our daily lives. I am convinced we have it all figured out now and that we are moving at such a fast rate that we need to embrace that change. When we do, I hope we are able to follow our dreams and become e-book writers and readers.
